My approach to photography reflects my fine arts background with a BFA from the University of Washington, Seattle and an Master's of Science, Conservation of Art on Paper from Buffalo State University, NY. Video/film at Maine Media Workshop, Rockport, Maine, Photoshop CS5 and Final Cut Pro 7 for video/film editing Lydia. In my personal work I strive for clarity examining the age old enigmas of love, desire, and memory.
Events and weddings are wonderful occasions to capture people's expressions at a very special time. I enjoy working with family members to create images of lasting importance. Generally, wedding photos are grouped as follows: getting ready, bride with bridesmaids, groom with grooms, bridal party, detail shots e.g., rings, bouquet, etc., reception, ceremony, toast, children, departure, cake cutting, and dancing. Normally, I interview, in-person or by-phone, the major participants to determine what pictures they want, how many, and what size, in advance of the event. The formal pictures are taken in the studio for best quality results. Frequently senior family members want formal group photographs of their entire clan during the event, while younger members want the snap shot look of things in motion and candid unguarded moments. There is a wonderful continuum in life here - the old becomes new, the new becomes old, and the cycle begins again. .
Still photography ranges from outdoor to studio with emphasis on studio since that will provide the best control of lighting. Also the studio provides the best in cameras and lenses. Commercial work in Washington DC usually involves very busy people who have little time. I can set up in location convenient to them and their schedule. Fashion and personal portraiture is what I enjoy doing most. We are accustomed to seeing perfect bodies and faces in magazines, and commercials. More often than not, those glamorous perfect images do not exist except in the retoucher's computer. We use Photoshop CS5 to edit photos requiring removal of skin blemishes and even on one occasion to removed braces on the brides teeth!
In video work I primarily use a Sony PMW 1R professional camcord to get great high definition video. The use of Steadicam stabilization system and tripod gives the video a very smooth and professional appearance. Editing is done in-house with Final Cut Pro 7, a state of the arts film editing system which includes exceptional audio capabilities. Editing of raw files into clips within a sequence and fine tuning with audio recording and music is all part of making a professional product. It depends on you how the final product will appear as Quick Movie on DVD, iPod, television screen or film.
I will do pro bono photography occasionally for environmental issues, AIDS fund raising, or local causes to go with an editorial. I will shoot the photographs charging only material cost and donating my time. For Spec photography I will team up with a editorial writer to produce a photo story, hopefully pre-sold.
Hair, make-up artists, and prop/set design are available at extra cost with advance arrangement. This fee is paid directly to the make-up or hair artist. If you have your own hair designer go for it. The make-up room is provided. Guys generally do not need make-up. If you prefer facial hair don't shave but formal shots are usually clean shaven.
We are all human. If you are sick, stressed out and need to postpone the session please give me a call as early as possible. Good photographs happen when you feel good, are relaxed, and enjoying yourself.
